Pilot Education

What’s at the End of Your Runway?

Zodiac Arresting Systems realized that a major component of airport safety was to build awareness with the professional pilot community about the presence of EMAS systems on airport runways. Zodiac Arresting Systems engaged the Airline Pilots Association (ALPA) and the Coalition of Airline Pilots Associations (CAPA), which includes the pilot associations from American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, UPS and US Airways, as well as the business aircraft operator community.

The first step was to standardize depiction of EMAS on airfield diagram charts used by pilots. Next, we provided these groups and their associated companies with suggested guidance on training topics to help increase the line pilot’s awareness and understanding of EMAS. To complete the process, The FAA Flight Standards Section and Office of Runway Safety took note of these recommendations and successfully encouraged aircraft operators to implement EMAS awareness training in their own programs/courses.
