Environmental protection


Zodiac Aerospace has defined a precise framework for the management of its environmental footprint, with regular reporting and exchange of information between sites and with the profession, in order to promote the spread of best practice.

 

Reducing the environmental impact

The actions taken by the Zodiac Aerospace group to promote environmental protection come under two connected structures:
  • A global structure, linked to ISO 14001, within which the Group encourages its various sites to deploy environmental management systems that meet the international standard or, for sites already certified, to continue to make further progress,
  • Local structures within which the sites commit to:
    • Reducing their waste production:  recovering at least 80% and recycling at least 45% ;
    • Cutting their greenhouse gas emissions particularly through reducing their energy consumption;
    • Consuming less water and incorporating environmental constraints in the design and manufacture of their products and services.

 

These structures are enshrined in a Health Safety Environment policy and they are monitored within a reporting system that measures the progress made.

 

Management of the air and CO2

Atmospheric emissions are mainly related to processes using solvents. They are monitored and quantified using emission control systems and reviewed annually.

The Group has begun reporting on its direct and indirect CO2 emissions and some sites have supplemented their environmental analysis with a carbon footprint report.

In parallel, energy audits are being conducted at pilot sites to identify actions for improvement.

 

Water management

Under its water management policy, Zodiac Aerospace raises awareness at the different sites and among all its staff on the scarcity of the resource. It pays particular attention to process water, which is principally derived from surface treatment activities. The sites collect the polluted effluent and either transport it to approved specialists or treat it internally at detoxification plants, ensuring that it complies with regulatory thresholds before discharge.

The actions in place are subject to bi-annual reporting.

 

Lifecycle analysis of the products

The tool Eco-Design was implemented in several entities and enables the environmental impact of a product to be proactively determined throughout its lifecycle.

Eco-Design encourages entities to select materials, parts and packaging based on key environmental parameters: lighter weight, recyclability, dismantling etc.

Several “Eco-Design” training sessions have been organized by the Group for the various research entities and technical departments.

 

Projet Clean-Sky

Zodiac Aerospace is a member of the European Clean Sky program, aimed at making air transport more environmentally friendly to ensure cleaner skies. It is a Joint Technology Initiative in which fourteen industrial companies and European aerospace research organizations are collaborating.
